Your (Jewish radio) life with CFRC
February 11, 2013

cfrc-funddrive2013Dear radio613 listener,

This week, from February 8-17, is the the 8th annual Funding Drive for CFRC 101.9fm – Kingston’s only volunteer-based, listener-supported radio station and the home of radio613. CFRC relies on listener donations for almost 20% of its operating revenue. The goal for this year’s Funding Drive is $25,000, to be raised across 10 days of special programming and community events.

CFRC has been a a perpetual source of support for radio613 over the years – helping us with phone patches, ordering new klezmer releases, providing production feedback, or just generally being an oasis for ourselves and others to engage in creative self-expression. The radio613 collective really would not exist as we do without the station. To continue broadcasting Jewish politics, culture, and religious life from an autonomous perspective, we’re asking for your financial help…

Today, Monday, February 11 is our funding drive show! Please consider making a donation during the show, from 7-8pmET by calling 613-533-2372. Charitable tax receipts are available and to show our appreciation to folks who make a pledge, the radio613 collective will send you a compilation CD of some of the best stories, poetry, and music we have featured on radio613 – in the mail! It would also be our pleasure to give an on-air mention or play a song request for you on the show tonight. As always, you can tune in online at http://www.cfrc.ca or for those of you within the 613-area code – 101.9fm on your radio dial!

Thank you very much in advance for your generosity.

!זאל זיין מיט מזל אפרג / Good Luck OPIRG!
January 24, 2012

As listeners may know, radio613 is a proud working group of OPIRG-Kingston – a non-profit environmental and social justice organization based at Queen’s University. OPIRG provides our radio collective with invaluable support – like webspace for our podcasts, recording equipment to take the show on the road, funds to organize local events (like the recent presentation by Yiddish sound artist Reena Katz and concert from Whiskey Rabbi Geoff Berner), and general social and emotional support that we very much need to continue making local, independent, progressive Jewish radio.

Next week, on January 31st and February 1st, OPIRG-Kingston is facing a referendum in which all undergraduate students at Queen’s will decide whether or not to continue providing funding for the organization through a $4 Opt-Outable Student fee. We strongly encourage students to vote ‘YES!’ in the upcoming referendum.

Many thanks,

radio613 collective

Episode 38: No Bill 94 – Kingston Panel Discussion
May 4, 2010

In early 2010, the Jean Charest government proposed legislation which, if approved by the National Assembly of Quebec, would deny essential government services, public employment, educational opportunities, and health care to people who wear facial coverings.

This week, radio613 airs audio from a panel discussion held in Kingston on April 27, 2010 exploring Bill 94 from legal, feminist, and religious perspectives. Featured speakers include: Dr. Mona Rahman – Active member of the Islamic Society of Kingston;  Dr. Beverly Baines – Gender Studies Department Head & Professor of Law, Queen’s University; Dr. Dana Olwan – Assistant Professor, Gender Studies, Queen’s University.

Soul Shakedown
February 11, 2010

Another way to support campus and community radio is to come dance at CFRC 2010: A Beat Odyssey on Saturday February 13 at the Time to Laugh Comedy Club in Kingston. As per the newly founded blog:

“Soul Shakedown parties aim to bring the best in rare dance grooves from funk, soul to Latin, Brazilian, Pan-African, Arabic, Asian Dub, Bhangra Hip Hop and more. The party also raises funds for organizations doing social justice work and groups that challenge the status quo of neoliberal capitalism and colonization. We strive to construct a safe space where diverse peoples can shake it out with freedom and flair.”

Funds for the upcoming event go towards supporting CFRC. I will be joining the incredible Soul Shakedown crew this Saturday to play a funky mix of klezmer, Balkan, and Roma music.

Time to tantz!!!!

Support Community Radio!
February 11, 2010

The CFRC 101.9fm in funding drive is underway! The drive runs from February 5-14 and the goal for this year is $25,000. CFRC is a not-for-profit, volunteer-based, listener-supported station broadcasting out of the 613-area code in Kingston, Ontario. The station relies on contributions made during the Funding Drive for much of its operating revenue. It is also a station that provides the radio613 collective with space and enthusiasm needed to bring some Yiddishkayt (and many other critical voices) to the airwaves.

The radio613 funding drive special was yesterday…we had a wonderful time and so appreciate the donations that were called in. The archived show is available here. Don’t worry, you still have a chance to donate!!! Click here to do so online, or call in during Semitic Soul tonight (Thursday) from 10-11pm to make an on-air donation. The number is 613-533-CFRC (2372).

Thanks!

Episode 18: Autonomous Seder 5769
April 20, 2009

radio613 episode 18! The Festival of Freedom goes to air broadcasting the Autonomous Seder 5769, held in Kingston on the first night of Passover. Jews, Muslims, political and spiritual allies gather to retell the story of Exodus. The Seder provided a forum to resist Pharaohs of all forms through songs, prayers and readings from a Passover Haggadah for Us, Koran and Torah teachings, and discussion. From Kadesh to Nirtzah, it’s maror for your ears!

Much thanks to all those who participated in this year’s Autonomous Seder.

Download our “Haggadah for Us” (thanks to the Velveteen Rabbi,  and Micah Bazant and Dara Silverman whose Haggadot were used to compile our own).

Episode 15: “Smash the walls of hate”
March 4, 2009

On February 23, the cross-Turtle Island Anarchists Against the Wall speaking and fundraiser tour arrived in Kingston for an event entitled: “Resisting the Wall: The Israeli Anarchist Movement”. This week’s show features excerpts from the presentation by Shachaf Polakow, an Israeli actvist, street medic, photographer with the ActiveStills collective and a member of Anarchists Against the Wall. Shachaf presents an informative perspective on the violent impact of the Wall and details the means of direct action solidarity Israeli Jews are engaged in, working in cooperation with Palestinians in a joint popular struggle against the occupation.

Music featured this week: “Sledgehammer” by Invincible and “Beyond Chutzpah” by Mark Gunnery
