Episode 19: Convergence Theatre, new klezmer tradition(s)

This week on radio613, an interview with Julie Tepperman and Aaron Willis, the duo behind Convergence Theatre and the play Yichud (Seclusion).  Yichud has been performed at the Lab Cab, Ashkenaz, and Fringe Festivals in Toronto since 2008. Harold Green Jewish Theatre and Theatre Passe Muraille are co-producing tan extended version of Yichud to be performed beginning in February 2010.

The second half of the show features a radio613 interview with Klezmer musicians/thinkers Michael Winograd, Daniel Blacksberg, and Henry Sapoznik. The discussion explores paths paved by communities of musicians seeking new forms of expression rooted in traditional culture and sound. This week on radio613…an interview with Jason Rosenblatt – arranger and harmonica player for Ashkenaz/Turkish inspired group Shtreiml…a reading and interview with author Leanne Lieberman at the Kingston launch of her novel ‘Gravity’ which tells the story of a young queer woman of faith growing up in an Orthodox Jewish community. The show concludes with a broadcast of Rev Zalman Schacter: “How often are you Jew-ing? With kavanah?”
